Underlying Reasons for Progress:
Underlying Reasons for Challenge:
The focus on data in an individualized manner helped teachers and students understand where our baseline was and what we need to accomplish to have a successful year.
We are continuing to look at ways to improve fluency in reading. Reading has been a low area for Northwest and technology with training has been added to improve the area of instruction.
Goals for 2014-15 school year:
Increase the percentage of students scoring proficient/advanced on reading/language arts TCAP assessment in grades 3-8 from 28.1% to 32.6%.
Increase the percentage of students scoring proficient/advanced on math TCAP assessment in grades 3-8 from 31.9% to 36.2%.
Increase 3rd grade students scoring proficient/advanced in reading/language arts TCAP assessment from 26.8% to 31.4%.
Increase 7th grade students scoring proficient/advanced in reading/language arts TCAP assessment from 32.6% to 36.8%.
Increase 7th grade students scoring proficient/advanced on math TCAP assessment from 25.6% to 30.3%.
Plan for this school year:
Key strategies to achieve goals:
1. Strategy: Study Island
Implementation Plan: August 2014-May 2015
Desired outcomes: Increase percentage of 3-8 students scoring proficient/advanced in reading/language arts from 28.1 % to 32.6% and in math from 31.9% to 36.2%
Projected costs and funding sources: “Study Island” has been purchased through Central Office funds: total cost unknown
Describe how this specific strategy will help you achieve your goals for the 2014-15 school year and address areas of challenge from the past year:
The “Study Island” program allows the students in grades three through eight to benchmarked three or four times during the year. The program is designed to help students master state standards and improve performance using immediate feedback and built-in remediation capabilities. This allows for both self-paced, individualized learning and teacher-led whole-class instruction. Teachers at Northwest in grades three through eight use Study Island during their computer lab times.
2. Strategy: IXL
The “IXL” program is used in math for grades K to eighth and in reading/language arts in grades two to sixth. The skills are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and the Tennessee Curriculum Standards. The program automatically tracks student progress and displays proficiency scores in the state standards reports which allow teachers to quickly evaluate aptitude and identify trouble spots. “IXL” is used during computer lab time, for whole-class instruction, and center time.
3. Strategy: RTI2 Implementation
Implementation Plan: 30 minute daily reading and math block
Desired outcomes: Increase percentage of 3-8 students scoring proficient/advanced in reading/language arts from 28.1 % to 32.6% and in math from 31.9% to 36.2%
Projected costs and funding sources: : AIMSweb has been purchased
through Central Office funds countywide for benchmarking and progress
monitoring in Reading/Language Arts and Math: total cost is unknown.
Describe how this specific strategy will help you achieve your goals for the 2014-15 school year and address areas of challenge from the past year:
As the RTI2 initiative is implemented this year, students will be better
identified for academic interventions and support. Students will take a
grade-level AIMSweb benchmark assessment in RLA and Math. Based on
the assessment score, students will be placed in Tier 1, 2, or 3 to receive
intervention. All students will participate in the 30-minute math or
reading block. The lowest 25% which are the Tier 3 students will receive an
additional 45 minute reading intervention block daily. At Northwes,t our
special education students including some of our higher functioning CDC
students are also participating in the appropriate tiers to meet their
specific educational needs. At Northwest, students truly “walkabout” the
school as they travel to their respective meeting group which is based on
individual need not grade levels. At Northwest we understand that
students learn to read in grades K-3, this is why we have emphasized
using our data and formative assessments to enhance our Tier I students.
These K-3 Tier I students to a classroom where they are being
challenged to advance to a higher functioning academic level.
4. Strategy: Before and after-school tutoring
Implementation Plan: mid-October through mid-April
Desired outcomes: Increase percentage of 3-8 students scoring proficient/advanced in reading/language arts from 28.1 % to 32.6% and in math from 31.9% to 36.2%
Projected costs and funding sources: Title I funding will pay for teacher tutors; total cost unknown
Describe how this specific strategy will help you achieve your goals for the 2014-2015 school year and address areas of challenge from the past year:
The tutoring sessions will focus more on TCAP preparation in reading/language arts and math at each grade level. The tutoring will focus on TCAP practice using TCAP format questions. The students identified for tutoring scored basic or below basic on their 2013-2014 TCAP grade level assessments. Daily practice on TCAP assessments in reading/language arts and math will help them with their benchmark test and on the actual TCAP test at the end of the school year.
5. Strategy: CORE Reading Instruction classes
Implementation Plan: August 2014-May 2015
Desired outcomes: Improved instructional practices in reading that will hopefully improve overall reading and language arts growth and achievement in kindergarten – 8th grade
Projected costs and funding sources: FTTT system funds: cost unknown
Describe how this specific strategy will help you achieve your goals for the 2014-2015 school year and address areas of challenge from the past year:
Overall growth and achievement in the area of reading/language arts was lacking at the K-8 grade level. We hope that the teachers who are required to attend the classes will be able to implement instructional strategies that will increase reading comprehension, improve reading fluency, and therefore increase overall achievement in reading and language arts at the K-8 level. Additionally, the CORE reading instructional classes should have a positive impact on our target AMO for 3-8 RLA, which is to raise it from 28.1% to 32.6%.
6. Strategy: D2 assessment
Implementation Plan: August 2014-May 2015
Desired Outcome: Provide Northwest teachers with data so they can plan and adjust instruction to increase the number of students scoring proficient/advance on the TCAP.
Projected costs and funding sources: System funds: cost unknown
Describe how this specific strategy will help you achieve your goals for the 2014-2015 school year and address areas of challenge from the past year:
At Northwest we benchmark students in grades three to eight three times a year (in the early fall, late fall to early winter, and again in early spring)to find out where student scores rank in relation to proficiency. Northwest teachers then use this data and student scores to plan their instruction to close the gap between the student’s fall benchmark score was and where that student needs to be by the spring benchmark.
7. Strategy: Parental involvement
Implementation Plan: August 2014-May 2015
Desired Outcome: Increase parent involvement and community support
Projected costs and funding sources: Title I/other funds; cost -unknown
Describe how this specific strategy will help you achieve your goals for the 2014-2015 school year and address areas of challenge from the past year:
At Northwest our teachers understand that parental involvement is essential to student academic success. Northwest has installed a state of the art electronic sign to inform parents as well as the community of upcoming events. A variety of events are planned at Northwest to unite teachers and parents and enhance community involvement. Events include our beginning of the year meet-n-greet, which provides parents the opportunity to meet their child’s teacher in a more relaxed atmosphere and provides teachers the opportunity to meet the parent and share expectations of the upcoming school year. Parents are always encouraged to be involved in their child’s education as well as being able to attend or even volunteer at any of the extra-curricular activities at Northwest. Some of these events include: Fall Carnival, school auction, and Christmas variety show. Northwest also plans events that include community figures such as: Newport Fire Department vs. faculty ballgames, Jeremy Faison and others judging Northwest Chili Cook-off, and community figures to judge the Northwest Christmas Talent Show. Northwest also is involved in several community outreach programs like Mission of Hope backpack and Christmas program, Save the Children’s shoes provided by Toms, Second Harvest, and Helen Ross McNabb Mental Health Service.
